As Rahman turns 49 on January 6 2017, we present a collection of some of AR Rahman’s most famous Bollywood albums.
1. Roja (1992)
This hypnotic movie introduced Hindi films to AR Rahman. Many still believe that this was his best composition till date. It was also Rahman’s first work as a music director.
Originally, composed for Tamil movie, Roja, this soundtrack also features in Time’s Ten Best Soundtracks of All Time!
2. Bombay (1995)
This ingenious soundtrack announced to the world that AR Rahman was a talent to look out for! This was another famous Tamil composition which also went on to become one of AR Rahman’s most famous Bollywood albums.
3. Rangeela (1995)
Rangeela soundtrack became so popular that it boosted the film fortunes of its lead characters. Apart from being one of the best of AR Rahman’s most famous Bollywood albums, it was also his first original composition for a Hindi film.
4. Jeans (1998)
This film was more famous for AR Rahman’s music despite featuring Aishwarya Rai and the 7 wonders of the world! Aishwarya being a Miss World pageant winner and 7 wonders featuring in one song made Jeans famous.
But the music by AR Rahman received highest accolades!
5. Dil Se (1998)
Released in the same year as Jeans, Dil Se soundtrack became a cult classic. Arguably best of AR Rahman’s most famous Bollywood albums, people are still heard humming to Dil Se songs.
6. Taal (1999)
Taal music album cemented AR Rahman’s place in all time greats of Hindi film music industry. The film features a love story with music its central theme. The soundtrack of Taal was magical to say the least!
7. Dil Hi Dil Mein (2000)
This movie comprised the new generation communication in India focused on youth. Although, the film did not become very popular, the music did! The songs were immortalized with soulful, vibrant and fresh tracks.
Dil Hi Dil Mein is also one of AR Rahman’s best Bollywood albums.
8. Laagan (2001)
The new century introduced a new generation of Hindi films starting with blockbuster Lagaan. Once again, AR Rahman proved his great ability to churn out great music consistently.
Only this time it was extraordinarily famous!
9. Saathiya (2002)
Saathiya was AR Rahman’s most famous Bollywood albums among youth at the time of its release. It became the anthem of all lovers and is still very popular among music lovers. Saathiya songs are a legend in not only Hindi but all the other languages in which it was released.
10. Swades (2004)
Swades movie soundtrack made AR Rahman king of diversity and innovation. It had an innovative story with very solid performances from the cast. Hence, the music had to live up to the rest of the movie.
And AR Rahman, once more, rose to the occasion to deliver a melodious album.
11. Rang De Basanti (2006)
If Saathiya soundtrack was an anthem for youngsters, Rang De Basanti songs were a tsunami of energy and motivation for young India.
Upon release, everyone was at a loss of words to describe the attraction of Rang De Basanti soundtrack. It was another of AR Rahman’s most famous Bollywood albums.
12. Guru (2007)
Guru was a masterly crafted film based on the life of a very business person’s journey to the top. Many would have thought that there would be little to expect with the music.
But not with Rahman directing the music! He produced a sensational musical by combining Gujarati folk and modern music. Again, this was not only one of AR Rahman’s best Bollywood songs album but also one of the best music albums ever!
13. Jodha Akbar (2008)
This was a sensational movie with larger than life picturization. After all, it was an account of one of the best Indian rulers. As expected, AR Rahman was drafted in as the music director of this big movie.
And he went on to create other epic music albums of all time. The music gave goose bumps as it resonated in the movie halls and ears of the audience. And people knew it was the master artist at work again!
14. Delhi 6 (2009)
One of the most innovative movies of the time, Delhi 6 also had a wonderful soundtrack. It made headlines for the song ‘Masakalli’ which was not originally in the movie.
For this movie, AR Rahman took inspiration from folk culture and local customs. The result was another super hit album from the master.
15. Rockstar (2011)
Rockstar movie hummed on the lips of every young music lover of India. Since, the story of a Rockstar had to be all about music, there was no doubt who would be the music director.
But in his usual style, AR Rahman surprised people with a rich combination of rock, Bollywood and even Sufi folk in this album. Truly, there can be no other legend as good as Rahman with different types of music.
We understand that many people might feel that most of their favourite albums missed out! But such is the talent of this man that no one could do justice to him in thousands of words!
